Getting Licensed

Real estate is an exciting and demanding profession offering many rewards to committed professionals. Unlimited opportunities and challenges with the potential for unlimited income serves to create an exhilarating future for those who are full time professionals.

The future of real estate is filled with expanding technology, marketing opportunities, knowledge and competition, and the Real Estate Council of Ontario provides the first steps used to discover the possibilities in real estate as a career.

The Ontario Real Estate Association (OREA) developed and administers the educational courses required to become licensed in Ontario.

Individuals interested in becoming licensed as a real estate representative are required to successfully complete the three phases of the Real Estate as a Professional Career programcomplete a two year articling phase  and continue to take courses.

The Initial Licence

  To be licenced as a real estate representative you must successfully complete all three phases of the Real Estate as a Professional Career program within 18 months from the start date of Course 1


 Course 1

  • Must be completed within 12 months from the start date
  • Available by correspondence or online via the internet over a period of  30-days or less 
  • Offers a general overview of the benefits and limitations associated with a career in real estate
  • Provides an outline of the requirements for registration as a representative and the mathematical skills needed to handle typical transactions 
  • Looks at a number of specialty fields and career opportunities

 

Course 2 
 

  • Available by correspondence or online over a 60-day period, or through 60 hours of classroom instruction
  • Provides a general overview and introduction to the technical aspects of the real estate profession
  • Examines a number of statutory laws, rules and regulations that impact real estate transactions

Course 3

This phase of the course involves the choice between Residential and Industrial Commercial Investment (ICI) courses

Course 3 - Residential

  • Available through 80 hours of class time or a combination of 40 hours of class time and online or correspondence study
  • Offers knowledge about the practical aspects of real estate transactions and first-hand experience through different exercises covering a range of topics
  • Workshop activities cover a range of subjects including:
    •  
      • acquiring listings
      • marketing properties
      • qualifying buyers
      • preparing and presenting offers

Course 3 - ICI

  • Available through either 80 hours of class time or 40 hours of class combined with online or correspondence study
  • Series of courses designed for ICI practitioners
  • Provides examples and exercises covering a wide range of sub-specialty topics:
    •  
      • Office
      • Retail
      • Industrial
      • Multi-residential
      • Vacant land
